How to Cancel a Costco Membership and Get Your Refund: Executive Reward Math, Auto-Renew Timing (2026)
The short version: Costco will refund a membership fee when you cancel. Gold Star members usually get the full $65 back. Executive members are different. Costco subtracts any 2% Reward you’ve earned from the refund. Stopping auto renewal is a separate step, and it has to happen at least 72 hours before your renewal month starts.
The renewal charge shows up on the first of the month, usually on a card you forgot was attached. Then the question is whether you can get that money back. With Costco, you mostly can. The catch is in the Executive tier and in timing.
Costco advertises a “risk-free 100% satisfaction guarantee” on membership. That part is real. What the slogan doesn’t mention is how the 2% Reward eats into an Executive refund, or that cancelling the membership and turning off auto renew aren’t the same thing.
Below: the three ways to cancel, what you’ll actually get back for each membership type, and the dates that matter.

Does Costco give a full refund when you cancel your membership?
Yes, for most members. Costco’s Member Privileges and Conditions page promises a “risk-free 100% satisfaction guarantee” on membership as well as merchandise, with “limited exceptions.”
In practice, a Gold Star or Business member who cancels gets the annual fee back. There’s no published deadline and no proration on Costco’s page. You don’t have to explain why.
The big exception is the Executive upgrade. That one has its own rule, and it can shrink your refund to zero.
How do you cancel a Costco membership?
A Costco membership can be cancelled at any warehouse membership counter, by phone through the Member Service Center at 1-800-774-2678, or by chat, according to Costco’s Member Privileges and Conditions page as of October 2026.
- Pick your channel. The warehouse counter is the fastest for a refund. Phone and chat work if you’re not near a store.
- Bring or have ready your membership number. It’s on your card and in the Costco app.
- Say “cancel,” not “pause.” Costco doesn’t pause memberships. If you only want to stop the next charge, see the auto renewal section below.
- Ask how the refund will be paid. Get the amount and method stated before you hand the card back.
- Get it in writing. A receipt at the counter, or a confirmation email or chat transcript.
This part trips a lot of people up: the household card goes too. A membership includes a free household cardholder, so cancelling the primary membership cancels their access as well. Tell them first.

How much do you get back on an Executive membership?
An Executive member who cancels or downgrades gets the upgrade fee back minus any 2% Reward already issued or accrued, according to Costco’s Executive Rewards terms; if the reward is larger than the refund, the refund is zero and the extra reward is forfeited.
The Executive membership costs $130 a year, which is the $65 Gold Star fee plus a $65 upgrade. The 2% Reward is paid on qualified purchases and capped at $1,250 in any 12-month period, per the same page.
When I checked the Executive terms line by line, I found that the reward counts as soon as it’s “accrued,” not only after Costco mails it to you in the renewal statement. So it doesn’t help to cancel just before the reward is issued.
| Your situation | 2% Reward earned | Upgrade fee refund ($65 minus reward) | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Star, cancel | None | n/a; full $65 fee back | Simplest case |
| Executive, spent $500 | $10 | $55 | Most of the upgrade comes back |
| Executive, spent $2,000 | $40 | $25 | Roughly a third comes back |
| Executive, spent $3,250 | $65 | $0 | Break-even point |
| Executive, spent $5,000 | $100 | $0 | Keeping Executive pays; the extra $35 is lost if you cancel |
Our calculation from Costco’s published terms as of October 9, 2026: 2% of qualified pre-tax purchases, $65 upgrade fee. Real rewards exclude some purchases, so your number may be lower.
When I compared the numbers, the break-even point was exactly $3,250 a year in qualified spending. Below that, the upgrade costs more than it earns. Above it, cancelling the upgrade throws money away.
Full cancellation of an Executive membership works the same way. Costco’s terms subtract the reward “from the refund,” so expect your total refund to be reduced by whatever reward you’ve earned. Ask the counter for the exact number before you agree.
How do you stop Costco auto renewal before the next charge?
Costco auto renewal must be cancelled at least 72 hours before the first day of your renewal month, because that’s the day the card on file is charged, according to Costco’s Member Privileges and Conditions page.
You can stop it three ways: log in to your Costco account and click Renew Membership, visit a membership counter, or contact the Member Service Center by phone or chat.
A quick example. If your membership renews in November, the charge hits on November 1. Turn off auto renew by October 28 and you have a day of margin.
Missed it? Not a disaster. You can still cancel and use the satisfaction guarantee to get the fee back. It’s just more hassle than not being charged.
One timing detail worth knowing: Costco’s page says memberships renewed within two months after expiring are extended 12 months from the expiration date, not from the day you pay. Waiting to renew doesn’t buy you free months.
Should you downgrade instead of cancelling?
Downgrading from Executive to Gold Star makes sense if you still shop at Costco but spend less than about $3,250 a year in qualified purchases, because that’s the point where the 2% Reward stops covering the $65 upgrade fee.
A downgrade refunds the upgrade fee minus your reward, keeps your Gold Star membership, and keeps the household card. You lose Executive-only extras. Costco says those “will be discontinued.”
Honestly, most people asking “should I cancel Costco” really mean “should I stop paying $130.” Downgrading answers that without losing the gas prices and pharmacy savings.
Before You Hand Over the Card
A Costco cancellation is easy to undo in theory, but a few things don’t come back the same way.
- Sign-up offers. Costco’s join page currently gives new members a $40 (Executive) or $20 (Gold Star) digital Shop Card, but only if you haven’t been a member in the last 18 months. Cancel now and you won’t qualify for those again for a year and a half. If you got one recently, ask at the counter how it affects your refund.
- Unused Shop Cards. Spend them first. Costco’s page says only members can buy and reload Shop Cards.
- Linked services. Costco Travel bookings, pharmacy refills, and optical orders. Finish or move them.
- Auto renew card. Note which card it was on. You’ll want to watch that statement next month.
Tips
- Check your 2% Reward balance in your Costco account before you call. It decides whether downgrading beats cancelling.
- Cancel at the warehouse if you want the refund handled on the spot.
- Keep the chat transcript or receipt until the refund posts.
- Set a reminder for 5 days before your renewal month if you’re undecided.
Warnings
- Cancelling the membership cancels the household cardholder’s access too.
- Executive rewards already earned reduce your refund, even if they haven’t been issued yet.
- Rejoining within 18 months means no new-member Shop Card promotion.
- Costco can change its terms. Recheck the official pages if you’re reading this months later.
FAQ
Can I cancel my Costco membership online?
You can turn off auto renewal online through your Costco account. To cancel the membership itself, Costco lists the warehouse membership counter, the Member Service Center at 1-800-774-2678, and chat.
Can I get a refund if Costco already auto-renewed my membership?
Generally yes. Costco’s satisfaction guarantee covers the membership fee, so you can cancel after an auto-renewal charge and ask for it back. Executive members get less if they have already earned a 2% Reward.
Do I lose my Executive 2% Reward if I cancel?
The reward is subtracted from your refund rather than paid out separately. If your reward is bigger than the refund, you get no refund and the extra reward is forfeited.
