Copilot Chat History Missing After the Update? Your Chats Probably Aren’t Gone: How to Check, Export, and What Won’t Come Back (2026)
What’s going on: Microsoft is moving personal Copilot users into a merged, updated app. During that move, old chats can vanish from the sidebar for days. In most reports they aren’t deleted. You can confirm that by exporting your Copilot activity from the Microsoft privacy dashboard. Group Chats, Podcasts, and Deep Research reports are the exception. Those were retired on August 18, 2026 and won’t come back.
Yesterday’s conversation is gone. The sidebar starts on the day the app updated, and a banner says your past chats are “coming soon.”
That’s the most common Copilot complaint on Microsoft’s own Q&A forum since September, and it picked up again after an update in early October. Some people lost one long thread. Others lost everything before the refresh.
Most of those chats still exist. The tricky part is proving it, saving a copy, and knowing which pieces Microsoft really did retire. Here’s the order to work through it.

Why did my Copilot chat history disappear?
Microsoft Copilot chat history goes missing in fall 2026 mainly because Microsoft is migrating personal Copilot users into an updated, consolidated Copilot app, and past chats can stay unavailable until that data move finishes, according to Microsoft Support’s page on Copilot app changes.
Microsoft says most of the switch happens automatically and web users get redirected to the new version. Your chats, images, and other content you made with Copilot are supposed to move with you.
The banner is the clue. If you see “Past chats, Copilot Tasks, and Copilot Health are coming soon,” your account has already moved and the content hasn’t caught up yet.
When I checked the Microsoft Q&A threads, I noticed that the reports started around September 9, 2026 and kept coming through late September and into October. That’s a long rollout, not a one-day outage. (A one-day outage looks different. We covered one in the September 17 “trouble responding” error.)
Are my old Copilot chats deleted?
Usually not. A Microsoft support agent answering a September 29, 2026 Microsoft Q&A thread said the updated Copilot app keeps the last 18 months of conversation history for signed-in users, and that chats may be temporarily unavailable while the migration completes.
There’s evidence from users too. One person on Microsoft’s Tech Community forum found that chats missing from the app were still in their Copilot data export. And a moderator in another thread noted that some conversations reappeared after several days.
That said, nobody at Microsoft has published a date for when missing chats will finish moving. Moderators on the forum also say they can’t reach the Copilot backend to restore anything themselves.
So: likely still there, not guaranteed, no timeline. Save a copy now.
| What you see | What it most likely means | Will it come back? | Your move |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Past chats… coming soon” banner | Account migrated, content still moving | Expected to, no published date | Export to confirm, then wait |
| Sidebar starts on the update day, no banner | Migration lag or wrong account | Usually | Check sign-in method, then export |
| One chat: “Unable to load the content” | That conversation didn’t load after migration | Unknown | Report it in-app with a screenshot |
| Group Chat, Podcast, or Deep Research missing | Feature retired August 18, 2026 | No | Nothing to restore in the app |
| Chats missing only in the work account | Work and personal stay separate by design | They were never shared | Switch accounts |
How do I export my Copilot chats to check they still exist?
Personal Microsoft account holders can export Copilot app activity as a CSV file from the Microsoft privacy dashboard, under Privacy, then Empower your productivity, then Copilot, according to Microsoft’s privacy dashboard help page.
- Sign in to the privacy dashboard with the same Microsoft account you use in Copilot. The Copilot section is at account.microsoft.com/privacy/copilot.
- Open “Your Copilot app activity history,” then choose Copilot apps.
- Select “Export all activity history.” A CSV file downloads to your device.
- Open the file in Excel or any spreadsheet app and search for a phrase you remember from a missing chat.
- Keep the file somewhere safe. It’s your backup if the migration goes wrong.
Here’s where people get tripped up. The very next button on that page is “Delete all activity history.” Don’t click it. Microsoft’s own support agent told users not to delete activity history while troubleshooting, and it would wipe the copy you’re trying to protect.

What should I try before contacting support?
Before contacting Microsoft about missing Copilot chats, sign in at copilot.microsoft.com with the same personal account and sign-in method, refresh or sign out and back in, fully close and reopen the mobile app, and then check the privacy dashboard, per the steps a Microsoft support agent gave on Microsoft Q&A in September 2026.
- Same account, same method. Signing in with email one day and a phone number or Google-linked login the next can land you in a different profile.
- Use the account switcher if you have more than one Microsoft account.
- Hard refresh the web page, or sign out and back in.
- Close the app completely on your phone, not just back out of it.
- Look for in-app messages about a migration in progress.
- On Windows, one Microsoft moderator suggested Settings > Apps > Installed apps > the Copilot app > Advanced options > Repair, then Reset if that fails.
Honestly, if you see the “coming soon” banner, most of this won’t change anything. It mainly rules out the wrong-account problem, which is the one you can actually fix.
Still nothing after that? Go to Microsoft’s Contact Us page, choose Copilot, and ask for a support chat. Mention that your chats are in the CSV export if they are. It gives the agent something concrete.
One chat says “Unable to load the content”?
A single Copilot conversation that shows “Unable to load the content. Try refreshing” on every device, while other chats open normally, should be reported through Send feedback, then Report a problem, inside Copilot with a screenshot and the error text, as Microsoft’s Q&A guidance recommends.
One user on version 153.0.4234.38 lost access this way to a single large conversation across the desktop app, Edge, and other browsers. Nothing else was affected. There was no official reply on that thread.
When I compared that report with the others, I found that it looks less like the general migration lag and more like one thread that didn’t make the move. Export your data so the text is safe, then report it. Don’t keep re-opening it hoping it will load.
What’s Not Coming Back
Group Chat threads, Podcasts, and Deep Research reports stopped carrying forward after August 18, 2026, and Microsoft lists them as content that does not move to the updated Copilot app.
A few more things change shape rather than vanish:
- Projects are now called Notebooks in the updated app.
- Task memories don’t migrate, even though the task conversations do.
- Shared links to Tasks responses stop working.
- Files you shared with or created in the standalone Copilot app move to OneDrive.
Most people skip this list and spend an evening hunting for a Deep Research report that no longer exists anywhere in the app.
Tips
- Export your Copilot activity once a month while the migration is still rolling out.
- Copy anything critical out of Copilot into a document. Chat apps are not archives.
- Check OneDrive for files you generated in the old Copilot app.
- Look under Notebooks, not Projects, for your organized work.
Warnings
- Never press “Delete all activity history” while chats are missing. It’s right next to the export button.
- Forum moderators can’t restore chats. Only Microsoft’s Copilot team can.
- Microsoft hasn’t published a finish date for the migration.
- These steps are for personal Microsoft accounts. Work or school accounts follow their admin’s settings.
FAQ
How long does the Copilot chat migration take?
Microsoft hasn’t given a timeline. Its guidance only says the migration can take time and chats may be unavailable until the data move completes. Some users reported chats coming back after several days.
Why do I see my Copilot chats on the web but not in the app?
During the migration, the app can show past chats as coming soon while the same chats are still reachable through the web experience. Sign in at copilot.microsoft.com with the same account to check.
Do work account Copilot chats show up in my personal Copilot?
No. Microsoft keeps work or school and personal Copilot experiences separate by design, so chats from one account never appear in the other. Use the account switcher to change profiles.
