Claude Not Showing in Google Docs or Sheets? Fixing “Not Allowed by Your Administrator” and Other Claude for Workspace Beta Errors (2026)

Short answer: Claude for Google Workspace is a beta for Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise only. Free accounts don’t get it. If it’s missing from the Extensions menu, reload the file first. Then check you’re signed in with the Google account that installed it. “This application is not allowed by your administrator” is a Google setting, and only your Workspace admin can clear it. Firefox isn’t supported. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files have to be converted to Google format first.

“This application is not allowed by your administrator.”

If you’re adding Claude to Google Docs on a work or school account, that’s the message you’re most likely to hit. Anthropic opened the Claude sidebar for Docs, Sheets, and Slides as a public beta in early October 2026, as Tech Times reported on October 7. The install looks simple. But whether it works for you depends on three separate things, and only one of them is your Claude plan.

Below are the fixes for each error, in the order you’re likely to hit them, plus what the add-on can and can’t touch in your files.

In This Fix-It Guide

Who can use Claude in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides?

Claude for Google Workspace is available in beta for Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, and the user also needs a Google account that’s allowed to install Google Workspace Marketplace apps, according to Anthropic’s Claude Help Center article.

So there are three gates:

  • A paid Claude plan. Free users can’t use it.
  • A Claude account sign-in. API keys and cloud-provider sign-ins like Bedrock or Vertex AI don’t work.
  • A Google account allowed to install Marketplace apps. On a personal Gmail account that’s usually fine. On a work or school account, your admin decides.

When I checked Anthropic’s wording, I noticed one line that explains most of the confusion. Access “depends on your Google Workspace admin’s Marketplace settings, not on your Claude plan.” Paying for Max doesn’t override a blocked Google domain.

Why is Claude missing from the Extensions menu?

Claude usually doesn’t appear under Extensions in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides because the open file wasn’t reloaded after installing, the browser is signed in to a different Google account, or an admin hasn’t installed or allowlisted the add-on, according to Anthropic’s troubleshooting notes.

  1. Reload the file. Files that were already open when you installed won’t show the add-on until you refresh.
  2. Check the account in the top-right corner. It has to be the same Google account you installed Claude with.
  3. Search the menu. Press Alt + / on Windows or Option + / on a Mac, then type “Claude.”
  4. Open it the right way. Go to Extensions, then Claude, then Open Claude. Then sign in with your Claude account in the sidebar.
  5. Ask your admin if none of that works on a work account. They may need to install it for you.

One install covers all three apps. You don’t need to add it separately to Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

How do you fix “This application is not allowed by your administrator”?

The “This application is not allowed by your administrator” message comes from Google, not Anthropic, and only a Google Workspace admin can fix it, either by allowlisting Claude in the Marketplace settings or by using Admin install for the organization, per Anthropic’s Help Center.

Here’s where people get stuck. They contact Anthropic support, upgrade their plan, or reinstall. None of that helps.

If you’re the admin, there are two routes in the Google Admin console:

Method 1: Admin install (works even if user installs are blocked)

  1. Open the Claude listing in the Google Workspace Marketplace while signed in as a super admin.
  2. Click Admin install.
  3. Choose who gets it: everyone in the organization, or specific groups or organizational units.
  4. Review the data access and terms, tick the agreement box, and click Finish.
  5. Tell users to reload any open files.

Method 2: Allowlist it so people can install it themselves

  1. In the Admin console, go to Apps, then Google Workspace Marketplace apps, then Settings.
  2. Add Claude to the allowlist. Google’s own Marketplace allowlist help page explains how the allowlist works.
  3. Let users install it from the Marketplace on their own.

If you’re not the admin, send them the add-on name and this section. It saves a round of back-and-forth.

Every Error Message, Decoded

When I compared the error messages in Anthropic’s Help Center side by side, I found that most of them trace back to a handful of causes. Here’s each one with the fix Anthropic gives.

What you see Likely cause What to do
“This application is not allowed by your administrator” Google Workspace Marketplace policy Admin allowlists Claude or uses Admin install
“Claude for Google Workspace needs a Claude account” You signed in before with an API key, Bedrock, Vertex AI, or a gateway Sign in with a Claude Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise account
Sidebar opens but nothing happens Firefox, or strict tracking protection Use Chrome, Edge, or Safari; reload and reopen Claude
Actions fail, or Claude can’t access the file Several Google accounts signed in at once Use a browser profile signed in to one account
“This document’s Claude add-in script is out of date” Cached old version of the add-on Reload the file and reopen Claude; retry later if it persists
“Exceeded maximum execution time” One operation ran past the six-minute limit Split the job into smaller steps
Earlier chat is gone History is stored per file in that browser only Use the same browser and the same file, not a copy

The multiple-accounts problem is the sneaky one. If your work and personal Google accounts are both signed in, Claude can open fine and then fail on every edit.

Charts and graphs on a laptop screen, representing Claude working inside Google Sheets and Slides
As of October 2026, Anthropic says Claude in Google Sheets can’t read Connected Sheets (BigQuery) tabs, and charts it adds to Slides are static images.

What can’t Claude do inside Google Docs and Sheets?

Claude for Google Workspace works only on the file that’s open, can’t export to PDF, stops if the sidebar is closed, and limits each operation to six minutes, according to Anthropic’s list of beta limitations for Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

Each app has its own gaps too:

  • Docs: Claude can’t read, reply to, or resolve comments. It can’t accept or reject suggestions, because its own edits go in directly. It can’t create, rename, or reorder tabs.
  • Sheets: it can’t read or edit Connected Sheets (BigQuery) tabs. It can’t create triggers, custom menus, or scheduled refreshes. A workaround from Anthropic: use Data, then Data connectors, then Extract to copy rows into a normal tab.
  • Slides: charts go in as static images, and Claude can’t refresh linked charts.
  • File types: only native Google files. A .docx or .xlsx opened in Google Docs or Sheets won’t work until you use File, then Save as Google Docs or Sheets.

Honestly, the Word and Excel one catches people more than anything. The file looks like a Google Doc, but it isn’t one.

Can Claude see your other Drive files?

By default, Claude for Google Workspace asks only for permission to view and manage the specific files it’s installed in and to show the sidebar, and Anthropic says it doesn’t request access to Drive, Gmail, Calendar, or contacts.

There’s one exception. Anthropic’s FAQ says that if you connect the Google Drive connector, Claude can use it to see other files. That’s off unless you turn it on.

A few other rules are built in:

  • Default mode is “Ask before edits.” Claude describes each change and waits for you to click Allow.
  • “Accept all edits” lets ordinary edits go through, but links, outside images, web addresses, and changes to who can access a file still need approval.
  • Some actions are never allowed: sharing the file, granting access, changing ownership, or creating scheduled automations.
  • Your conversation is private. Collaborators see the edits, credited to you, but not the chat.

On data, Anthropic says it doesn’t use content from the add-on to train its models, and that inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days, with some exceptions. Anthropic also says not to use it with protected health information. It isn’t covered for HIPAA.

Tips

  • Make a dedicated Chrome or Edge profile with only your work Google account signed in. It fixes the multiple-accounts error for good.
  • Before a big edit, open File, then Version history, and name the current version. Rolling back is then one click.
  • Keep “Ask before edits” on for shared files. Switch to “Accept all edits” only on drafts you own.
  • For long jobs, ask for one section or one sheet at a time. It avoids the six-minute timeout.

Warnings

  • Don’t run Claude on files you got from outside your organization without reviewing what it proposes. Anthropic warns about hidden instructions in documents.
  • Closing the sidebar or the tab stops Claude mid-task. Switching to another tab is fine.
  • Chat history isn’t synced. A private window, a different browser, or clearing site data means a blank sidebar.
  • Anthropic’s article only describes an admin uninstall, from the Google Admin console. If your admin installed it for everyone, ask them to remove it.

FAQ

Does Claude for Google Workspace work on the free Claude plan?

No. Anthropic lists the beta for Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans only. A free Claude account can’t sign in to the sidebar in Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.

Does Claude in Google Docs work in Firefox?

No. Anthropic says Firefox is not supported in this beta. Use Chrome, Edge, or Safari, and if the sidebar still does nothing, check whether strict tracking protection is blocking it.

Can I undo changes Claude made to my Google Doc?

Yes. Claude’s edits can be reversed with Undo or restored through File, then Version history. Naming a version before you start a large request makes rolling back easier.
