Fat Cat Card: How Much Balance a Hotel Hold Ties Up

Short answer: A hotel puts a hold on your card for its estimate of your bill, and that money is locked while you travel. On a prepaid USDT balance the lock is easy to feel. In the example below, a 700 balance minus a 640 hold leaves 60 to spend. Load the hold plus your spending plus a cushion. Here that is 902. Pay the final bill with the same card so the hold clears fast.

Check-in is where a prepaid card balance quietly shrinks.

You tap the card at the front desk, the screen says approved, and your app now shows far less than you loaded. Nothing was spent yet. This post works the numbers so you know how much to have on the card before you walk in.

Educational content, not investment or financial advice. Every figure in the tables is an invented round number to show the method. They are not Fat Cat Card rates, and hold rules differ by hotel, card network and issuer.

What is a card hold and who sets the amount?

A card hold, which the FTC calls a block, reserves part of your available funds for a business’s estimated total of your bill, and hotels and rental car companies are the usual senders (an FTC consumer article (archived copy)).

The business picks the amount, not you. The FTC suggests asking whether a block is being placed, what the amount is, how it was chosen and how long it will last.

On a debit card, the FTC notes, a block can lower your account balance enough that a recurring payment is declined. A prepaid USDT balance has the same shape: the card can only authorize what is free.

When I checked the Fat Cat Card site, I found that it gives no hold amounts or hold durations for any card. It says benefits and fees vary by country, identity verification and issuer policy, so the hold behavior of your own card is something to confirm in the issuer’s app (fatcatcard.com, checked November 3, 2026).

How much of a 700 balance does a 3-night hold lock?

If a hotel holds the room total plus an incidentals amount, a 3-night stay at 180 a night with a 100 incidentals hold locks 640 of a 700 USDT card balance and leaves only 60 to spend.

Line Assumed amount How it is worked out
Room total 540 3 nights × 180
Incidentals hold 100 Set by the hotel; ask for the number
Total hold 640 540 + 100
Card balance before check-in 700 Loaded earlier
Free to spend after the hold 60 700 − 640

So a 75 dinner on the first evening would be declined with a balance that looked healthy that morning.

That is the part that trips people up.

In the worked example, 640 of a 700 balance is reserved the moment the card is used at check-in.

How much should you load before check-in?

To cover a 640 hold plus 180 of daily spending and a 10% cushion, a traveler needs 902 on the card, which is 202 more than the 700 in the example above.

Step Amount Working
Expected hold 640 From the table above
Spending during the stay 180 60 a day × 3 days
Subtotal 820 640 + 180
10% cushion 82 820 × 0.10, rounded
Balance needed 902 820 + 82
Extra top-up from 700 202 902 − 700

Add the top-up’s own cost on top. With an assumed flat network fee of 1 per top-up, loading the extra 202 once costs 1, while loading it in four 50-ish pieces would cost about four times that. See Fat Cat Card: Small USDT Top-Ups and Fixed Fee Drag for the full fee-drag arithmetic.

Do the top-up a day before you travel. A deposit that is still confirming at check-in does you no good.

How long does the money stay frozen?

If you pay the final hotel bill with the same card, the FTC says the real charge will most likely replace the hold in a day or two, but if you pay with something else, the hold may last up to 15 days (the same FTC article).

One way to see the cost is to multiply the locked amount by the days it stays locked. Call it dollar-days. It is only a yardstick, not a fee.

Scenario Locked amount Days locked Dollar-days
Pay the final bill with the same card 640 2 1280
Pay the bill another way, hold left to expire 640 15 9600

The second row is 7.5 times the first. I noticed that the difference comes entirely from how you settle, not from the hotel, which is why the FTC’s advice is to pay with the card that took the hold and, if you do not, to ask the business to remove the earlier one.

What can you ask the front desk?

Four questions at check-in settle most of this: is a hold being placed, how much, how was it chosen and how long will it last.

Those are the FTC’s own suggested questions, and the answer to the second one is the only number you need for the formula above. Write it down, subtract it from your app balance, and you know what is free.

If a payment is declined anyway, our guide to what declined USDT card payments cost shows what a failed attempt can add, and adding a USDT card to Apple Pay covers the phone-wallet side of check-in.

Tips

  • Ask the hotel for the exact hold amount before you hand over the card.
  • Use one card for the reservation, the hold and the final bill.
  • Top up a day early, then check the free balance in the app after check-in.
  • Keep a second payment method for emergencies.

Warnings

  • Hold amounts and durations differ by hotel, network and issuer; the figures here are assumptions.
  • Paying the bill another way can leave the hold in place for up to 15 days, per the FTC.
  • Confirm card terms in the issuer’s own app before you rely on any number in this post.

FAQ

Does a hotel hold take money out of a USDT card balance?

A hold does not take the money, but it reserves part of the balance so you cannot spend it. The FTC describes a hold as a reserve of your available funds for the business's estimated total of your bill.

How long does a hotel hold last?

If you pay the final bill with the same card, the FTC says the charge will most likely replace the hold in a day or two. If you pay another way, the hold may last up to 15 days.

How much extra should I load before a hotel stay?

Load the expected hold plus your spending for the stay plus a cushion. In the worked example here, a 640 hold, 180 of spending and a 10% cushion comes to 902, so a 700 balance would be short by 202.
