1. Lactose that never got filtered out. Whey starts as a milk fraction. Cheaper processing leaves more of the milk sugar behind, which is why whey concentrate sits heavier for a lot of people than isolate does. 2. Sweeteners and sugar alcohols. Flavoured powders lean hard on sucralose, erythritol, sorbitol and xylitol to hit a dessert flavour at zero sugar. The NIDDK lists sorbitol and other sugar substitutes among the things that commonly produce gas, because they pass through to the large intestine largely unabsorbed and get fermented there. Fermentation makes gas. Gas makes pressure.

3. Gums, thickeners and bonus fiber. Xanthan gum, guar gum and inulin get added for texture and mouthfeel. They are what stop a shake tasting like chalk in water. Inulin in particular shows up in “gut health” formulas, which is a genuinely awkward irony if fiber is the thing bothering you.
4. The size and speed of the dose. A scoop is a large protein load arriving in a couple of minutes. Food never arrives that way. Chewing takes time, and the stomach empties gradually. Drinking 500ml of thick shake in ninety seconds is a different job for your digestion than eating the equivalent chicken breast over fifteen minutes. Some people feel that as heaviness rather than gas.

Most comparison tables rank these by muscle-building value. That ranking is useless if the problem is your stomach. Here they are sorted by what each type does to digestion instead.
When I went looking through public reviews for a few popular tubs, the complaint patterns split cleanly by category rather than by brand. Concentrate reviews talked about bloating. Plant blend reviews talked about texture and gas. Different problems entirely, sold from the same shelf.

One caveat on plant blends. Dairy-free does not mean gentle by default. Pea protein comes with its own fermentable carbohydrates, and the gums added to make it drinkable can undo the benefit of dropping dairy in the first place.
Pea alone tends to run short on methionine. Rice runs short on lysine. Blended together they cover each other, which is why the pea-rice combination keeps showing up on labels.
Tub prices are not comparable when scoop sizes differ. Put in the numbers from the label and the tag, and the answer comes out in the only unit that lets you compare shelves.

- Days 4-7: Same brand if it offers an unflavoured version, otherwise the plainest one you can find. This removes sweeteners and most flavouring gums while keeping the protein source constant.
- Days 8-14: Still uncomfortable? Now change the protein source itself. Whey concentrate users go to isolate. Isolate users go dairy-free.
Write down what you took and how you felt. Memory is unreliable across two weeks, and you will second-guess yourself by day nine.
If nothing in that sequence helps, the shake is probably not the variable that matters.
Does Timing Actually Change Anything?
For comfort, sometimes yes. Taking a shake on a completely empty stomach makes nausea more noticeable for some people, and pairing it with food slows the whole thing down.
For muscle results, the timing question is far less dramatic than supplement marketing suggests. Total daily protein and consistent training carry most of the weight. The “anabolic window” framing sells tubs better than it describes physiology.
Casein before bed is the one timing choice with an obvious mechanical logic. It curdles in stomach acid and releases amino acids slowly, which is a reasonable fit for the long overnight gap. That same curdling is also why it turns into pudding in the shaker within a minute.
When It Isn’t the Powder
Some symptoms deserve a clinician rather than another tub. Look for these:
- Discomfort that continues on days you skip the shake entirely
- The same reaction to meat, eggs, dairy and legumes as whole foods

Is whey isolate really easier on the stomach than concentrate?
