Gemini Gems Become Skills in November 2026: What Breaks (and What to Save Before the Switch)

Short answer: Google is retiring Gemini Gems for personal accounts in November 2026 and turning them into “skills” automatically. Work accounts follow in March 2027, school accounts in June 2027. The catch is in the details. Skills need Keep Activity turned on. They don’t accept .docx or .xlsx files. And they don’t yet work with Canvas, Deep Research, or video and music creation. Download your Gem files now and test one Gem as a skill before November.

If you built a Gem that writes in your voice or checks your work against a style guide, Google is about to rebuild it for you. Automatically. Whether you asked or not.

For a lot of simple Gems, that’s fine. For Gems that lean on uploaded Word files or on Canvas, the automatic move could quietly drop the parts that made them useful.

Here’s what Google’s own help pages say will and won’t make it across.

When Are Gemini Gems Going Away?

Google will remove Gems from the Gemini app for personal Google accounts in November 2026, for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts in March 2027, and for Workspace education accounts in June 2027, according to Google’s Gems-to-skills transition page. Android Authority and Notebookcheck report November 17 as the start date for personal accounts.

Google says it will recreate every Gem as a skill when Gems go away. Custom, premade, and shared Gems are all covered.

Two other things disappear at the same time in November: Opal, Google’s experiment for building mini apps, and Gems by Google Labs.

What’s Actually Different About Skills?

A Gemini skill is a reusable set of instructions that works inside any chat, while a Gem was a separate chatbot you had to open on its own. Google’s help page says you call a skill by typing / and its name, and Gemini can also apply a skill on its own when it decides the skill fits your prompt.

  • No separate window. You use skills inside normal chats, and several can stack in one conversation.
  • No per-Gem history page. Chats that used a skill show up in the regular side panel, mixed in with everything else.
  • Naming rules. Skill names are all lowercase with hyphens, like weekly-report-writer.
  • A limit of 100 active skills. You can create as many as you like, but only 100 can be on at once.
  • Same format as other platforms. Skills use a SKILL.md file, so you can import skills built elsewhere.

I noticed that the automatic-use feature is the biggest behavior change. A Gem only acted when you opened it. A skill can kick in on a chat where you didn’t expect it.

Which Gem Features Won’t Survive the Move?

Gemini skills do not yet support Create video, Create music, Canvas, Deep Research, or Guided learning, and they only accept plain-text-style files such as .txt, .md, .csv, .json, and PDF, not .docx or .xlsx, according to Google’s skills help page as of October 1, 2026. Any Gem built around those features or file types needs attention now.

What your Gem uses Works as a skill? What to do before November
Custom instructions only Yes Nothing required; copy your instructions somewhere as a backup
PDF, .txt, .md, .csv knowledge files Yes (supported types) Download copies anyway
.docx or .xlsx knowledge files Not supported for upload Save as PDF, .md, or .csv and rebuild
Canvas or Deep Research Not yet Keep using the Gem until November; plan a manual workflow
Create video, Create music, Guided learning Not yet Same as above
Connected Apps (Gmail, Docs, etc.) Yes Test once after recreating
Used from the Gemini phone app Partly — known bugs Create and edit skills on the web

Table: Gem-to-skill feature check compiled from Google’s Gemini Apps Help pages on skills and on the Gems transition, as of October 1, 2026.

When I compared the two help pages, I found that Google promises to move Gems “along with any supported files.” The upload rules separately list .docx and .xlsx as not supported. Put those together and it’s safest to assume Word and Excel files won’t come along.

That’s the gap most people will hit.

Why Do Skills Need Keep Activity On?

Google’s skills help page lists “Have Keep Activity on” as a requirement for creating and using Gemini skills, alongside being 18 or older and signing in with a personal Google account. If you turned Keep Activity off for privacy, skills won’t work until you turn it back on.

This is the part that may make some people pause. GSMGoTech’s write-up points out that Gems only required the setting when you added Drive files. Now it’s required for every skill.

When I checked GSMGoTech’s summary of Google’s privacy terms, the trade-off was spelled out: with Keep Activity on, chats are stored in your account and Google reviewers may read some of them. If that’s a dealbreaker, a plain saved prompt in a notes app is the private fallback.

How to Move a Gem to a Skill Yourself

Recreating a Gem as a Gemini skill by hand takes a few minutes per Gem on the Gemini web app, and doing it before November lets you check the result while the original Gem still exists. Google’s steps, condensed:

  1. Open the Gem at gemini.google.com, click Edit, and download every file under “Knowledge,” one at a time.
  2. Make a folder named like the skill, in lowercase with hyphens, and put the files in it. Convert any .docx or .xlsx files to PDF or .csv first.
  3. Create the skill. In a new tab, go to Settings > Skills > Create manually. Paste the Gem’s name, description, and instructions, then click Create.
  4. Download the skill (Skill actions > Download), unzip it, and move its SKILL.md file into your folder.
  5. Replace the skill with the folder (Skill actions > Replace skill > upload the folder). The folder name must match the skill name.
  6. Test it in a fresh chat by typing / and the skill name, using a prompt you’ve run on the Gem before. Compare the two answers.

Do this on a computer. Google lists two known mobile bugs right now: manually created skills won’t save in the phone app, and skills with uploaded files can’t be edited on mobile or the Mac app.

Should Anyone Wait for the Automatic Switch?

Gemini users whose Gems contain only custom instructions, with no files and no Canvas or Deep Research use, can safely let Google convert them automatically in November 2026. Everyone else is better off testing now.

Workspace users have more time. Business accounts move in March 2027 and schools in June 2027, and Google says skills will reach work and school accounts later. For now, they’re limited to personal accounts.

Honestly, those few minutes are worth it for any Gem you use weekly. You’ll find out whether it still behaves the same while you can still compare.

Tips

  • Write a clear “when to use” line in each skill’s description. Google says that’s how Gemini decides to apply a skill automatically.
  • If you have more than 100 Gems, decide now which ones you’ll keep active.
  • Keep a plain-text copy of every Gem’s instructions in a doc you control. It costs nothing and protects you from the next product change.

Warnings

  • Don’t assume your knowledge files will migrate. Download them, especially Word and Excel files.
  • Gems that rely on Deep Research or Canvas won’t work the same way as skills yet. Plan a workaround before November.
  • Some outlets reported an earlier cutoff for editing Gems. Google’s help pages, as of October 1, 2026, only give the November removal date — check them again mid-October.

FAQ

Do I need Google AI Pro or Ultra to use skills?

No. Google’s skills help page lists the requirements as being 18 or older, using a personal Google account, and having Keep Activity on. It doesn’t require a paid plan, and Android Authority reported on September 29, 2026 that skills are expanding to free accounts.

Will my shared Gems still work for the people I shared them with?

Google says custom, premade, and shared Gems will all be transitioned to skills. How sharing works for the converted skills isn’t fully described yet, so tell anyone relying on your Gem to keep a copy of its instructions.

Can I still use Gems at work after November 2026?

Yes, for now. The November 2026 removal applies to personal Google accounts. Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts keep Gems until March 2027, and education accounts until June 2027.
