Chromecast with Google TV 4K Finally Got Its First 2026 Update: How to Install It, and Why the HD Model Is a Year Behind on Security Patches

Short answer: Google started rolling out build UTTA.260813.002 to the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) on October 12, 2026. It’s the first update in 11 months, and it lifts the security patch from October 2025 to August 2026. The cheaper HD model didn’t get it. To install, go to Settings, System, About, System update. Google’s own firmware page also shows the newer Google TV Streamer is on an older April 2026 patch than the 4K Chromecast.

Eleven months is a long time for a streaming stick to sit without a patch.

That’s how long Chromecast with Google TV (4K) owners waited. Then on October 12, 2026, Google quietly added a new build to its firmware page. 9to5Google spotted it the same day. It’s not a feature update, and the changelog fits on three lines. But for a device a lot of people assumed was abandoned, it answers the bigger question.

Here’s how to get it, what to do if it won’t install, and where each Google streamer actually stands on security patches right now.

What does the October 2026 Chromecast with Google TV update change?

The October 2026 Chromecast with Google TV (4K) update, build UTTA.260813.002, raises the Android security patch level to August 2026 and adds “other bug fixes and performance improvements,” according to Google’s Chromecast firmware release notes checked on October 13, 2026.

That’s the whole changelog. No new features, no interface changes, no fix for any specific bug Google chose to name.

The security patch is the part that matters. Before this, the 4K model’s last update was build UTTC.250917.004 in November 2025, which carried the October 2025 patch. Ten months of Android security fixes land in one go. Streaming sticks sit on your home network all day with your Google account signed in, so that’s worth having.

How do you install the update on a Chromecast with Google TV?

A Chromecast with Google TV installs updates automatically, but owners can force the October 2026 build by going to Settings, then System, then About, then System update on the TV, which is the manual path Google lists on its firmware page.

Method 1: Pull the update from the TV

  1. Open Settings. Select your profile picture in the top-right corner of the Google TV home screen, then choose Settings.
  2. Go to System, then About.
  3. Select System update. The device checks with Google and offers the download if your unit is in the current rollout wave.
  4. Leave it plugged in. Don’t pull power while it installs. It will restart on its own.
  5. Confirm the build. Back in System, then About, check that the Android TV OS build reads UTTA.260813.002 and the security patch level shows August 2026.

If it says you’re up to date and the build number is still the old UTTC one, you’re just not in the current wave. Google rolls these out gradually. Check again in a day or two.

Why didn’t the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) get the update?

Google released build UTTA.260813.002 only for the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) on October 12, 2026, and its firmware page still lists the HD model on build UTTC.250917.004 with the October 2025 security patch, without explaining the gap.

That’s unusual. 9to5Google noted that the two models are normally updated at the same time.

When I compared the three streamers on Google’s firmware page side by side, I found that the order doesn’t follow age at all. The newest device isn’t the most up to date.

Device (launch year) Current build Security patch level Months behind (as of Oct 2026)
Chromecast with Google TV 4K (2020) UTTA.260813.002 August 2026 ~2
Google TV Streamer 4K (2024) UTTK.260317.003 April 2026 ~6
Chromecast with Google TV HD (2022) UTTC.250917.004 October 2025 ~12

Builds and patch levels from Google’s Chromecast and Google TV Streamer firmware release notes, checked October 13, 2026. “Months behind” is our count against October 2026.

So the HD model, the cheapest and second-newest of the three, is now about a year behind. Google TV Streamer owners, who paid the most, are about six months behind the old 4K stick.

Nothing on Google’s page says the HD won’t get this build later. It may just be on a different schedule. But if you own one, don’t assume an update is coming next week either.

Update Stuck or Not Showing? Work Through These

Most of the time the fix is patience. If it’s been a few days, go down this list in order.

  1. Check which model you have. In Settings, then System, then About, the model name tells you. If it’s the HD, there’s no new build to get yet.
  2. Restart it properly. Unplug the power cable from the wall, wait about a minute, and plug it back in. A menu restart doesn’t always clear a stuck download.
  3. Use the wall adapter that came with it. A TV’s USB port often can’t supply enough power, and low power causes odd failures during installs.
  4. Free up storage. Google’s help center has a page on freeing up storage on Chromecast with Google TV. Uninstall apps you don’t use, then try the update again. These sticks have little space, and an update needs room to unpack.
  5. Check Wi-Fi. If streaming buffers, a 700MB-plus download may be timing out. Move the router closer or use an Ethernet adapter if you have one.
  6. Factory reset as a last resort. It wipes your apps and sign-ins. Only do it if the device is otherwise misbehaving.

Honestly, step 2 and step 3 solve most of these.

Is the Chromecast with Google TV still supported in 2026?

Google said in May 2026 that it is not ending critical security updates for its Chromecast devices, after a support page briefly listed most models, including the Chromecast with Google TV (4K), as no longer supported, according to 9to5Google’s updated report.

That episode is why so many owners assumed their stick was dead. In May, Google’s Nest software-support page flipped five Chromecast models to “no” for critical updates. Google then told 9to5Google the page “incorrectly indicated deprecation” and corrected it.

The October 12 build is the first real proof since then. It fits Google’s correction. The 4K stick is still getting security patches, just not on a predictable schedule.

Reading 9to5Google’s May coverage, I noticed that the HD model was the one Chromecast still marked as supported even during the mix-up, because it’s inside Google’s five-year minimum window. Now it’s the one sitting a year behind. Supported and up to date aren’t the same thing.

Should you keep it or replace it?

For most people, keep it. Here’s how I’d split it, based on Google’s firmware page as of October 13, 2026.

  • Chromecast with Google TV (4K): install the update and keep using it. August 2026 is recent enough for a streaming device.
  • Chromecast with Google TV (HD): fine for streaming. Don’t sideload apps from unknown sources on a device a year behind on patches.
  • Google TV Streamer: six months behind isn’t alarming. Watch for its next build.
  • Thinking of switching? 9to5Google reported on October 9 that a next-generation Google TV Streamer is in the works. Buying the current model right before a replacement isn’t great timing. If you’re open to other platforms, our look at the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K and its switch to Vega OS covers the trade-offs there.

Tips

  • Write down your current build number before updating. If something breaks afterward, it’s the first thing support will ask for.
  • Turn on automatic app updates in the Play Store settings on the TV. App updates arrive far more often than system builds.
  • Check Google’s firmware page once a month. It’s the fastest official place new builds show up.
  • If your remote acts up after the update, re-pair it from Settings, then Remotes & Accessories, before buying a new one.

Warnings

  • Don’t unplug the device during an update. An interrupted install is the most common way to end up on a recovery screen.
  • Don’t install “firmware” files from forums or download sites. Updates come from Google over the air, not from a file you sideload.
  • Don’t assume a build number from a news article applies to your model. Check your own About screen.
  • Google hasn’t published an end date for any of these devices. Treat any site that gives you one as a guess.

FAQ

How big is the Chromecast with Google TV October 2026 update?

How do I check my Chromecast’s current security patch level?

On the TV, open Settings, then System, then About. The screen shows the Android TV OS build and the Android security patch level. After the October 2026 update, a 4K model should show August 2026.
