Compact Japanese hotel room with a made bed, booked through an online travel site

Rakuten Travel: How to Find a Good Japan Hotel Deal

Short answer: The best Rakuten Travel deal is the plan with the lowest total for your whole group, not the lowest number on the search page. Check whether the rate is per person or per room. Pick prepay or pay-at-hotel on purpose. Note the hotel’s own cancel deadline. Then add any local lodging tax. Five steps below.

Japanese hotel pages quote prices in a way that catches first-timers out: the same room can look cheap or expensive depending on whether the figure is per person or per room.

This guide walks through finding a fair Rakuten Travel hotel deal for a Japan trip. It does not quote prices or promo codes, because they change daily and I won’t print a number that might already be stale. It shows you how to read the ones in front of you.

Steps at a Glance

Step 1: Is the rate per person or per room?

Rakuten Travel hotel rates can be shown per person or per room per night depending on the hotel, according to the Rakuten Travel English FAQ, so the first job is to find which one a plan uses.

This is the single biggest source of “wait, why is it double?” at checkout. A plan that looks half the price of its neighbor may simply be a per-person figure for a two-person trip.

  • Set the exact number of adults before you search, not after.
  • Open the plan and look for the rate basis next to the price.
  • Multiply per-person plans by your headcount before comparing.

Kids count too. The same FAQ says children aged 12 and older are charged adult rates, and extra beds are not included in the room price.

Step 2: Should you prepay or pay at the hotel?

Rakuten Travel offers two payment routes that depend on the hotel: prepaying by credit card, where the room charge, service charge and taxes are charged right away, or paying at the hotel, where your card number is used only to guarantee the booking.

When I compared the two options in the official FAQ, I noticed that the refund path is the real difference. A prepaid plan that you cancel late gets refunded minus the hotel’s cancellation fee, and the FAQ warns that refunds can take a couple of months to show up. A pay-at-hotel plan leaves the money in your account until you arrive.

Question Prepay by card Pay at the hotel
When is your card charged? At booking At check-in or check-out
What is the card used for at booking? Full payment Guarantee only
Late cancellation Refund minus hotel’s fee Hotel may charge its fee to the card
Best for Fixed plans, a price you want to lock Plans that might still change

Some coupons on travel sites only work on one payment type. If a discount appears on one plan and vanishes on another, check which payment option you picked before assuming it expired.

Step 3: When is the hotel’s cancel deadline?

Each hotel listed on Rakuten Travel sets its own cancellation deadline and cancellation fee, and after that deadline you have to contact the hotel directly, the Rakuten Travel English FAQ says.

Most people skip this and regret it.

Write the deadline next to the booking number in your notes. If two plans are close in price and one has a later free-cancellation cutoff, that flexibility is often worth more than a small saving, especially if your flights are not booked yet.

Tokyo street at night where many hotels collect the local accommodation tax
Tokyo charges ¥100 per person per night on room charges of ¥10,000 to ¥14,999 and ¥200 at ¥15,000 or more; stays under ¥10,000 are exempt (Tokyo Metropolitan Government).

Step 4: How much is Tokyo’s accommodation tax?

Tokyo’s accommodation tax is ¥100 per person per night when the room charge is ¥10,000 to ¥14,999 per person and ¥200 when it is ¥15,000 or more, while stays under ¥10,000 per person per night are exempt, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s review document.

Small money, but it’s per person, per night. For a family of four over a week it adds up enough to shift a close comparison.

A change is coming. The same document says Tokyo plans to switch to a percentage-based tax and raise the exemption line to ¥13,000 per person per night, with the revised ordinance taking effect during fiscal 2027. If you are booking a 2027 trip, check the hotel’s tax note again closer to the date.

The worked example below uses made-up room prices to show how the per-person basis and the tax interact. They are not Rakuten Travel prices.

Plan (hypothetical, 2 adults, Tokyo) Rate shown Room total per night Per-person charge Tokyo tax per night (2 people) Total per night
Plan A ¥24,000 per room ¥24,000 ¥12,000 ¥200 ¥24,200
Plan B ¥13,000 per person ¥26,000 ¥13,000 ¥200 ¥26,200
Plan C ¥9,500 per person ¥19,000 ¥9,500 ¥0 (exempt) ¥19,000

Plan B looks cheapest on a search page because ¥13,000 is the smallest number shown. It is actually the most expensive of the three once you double it.

Step 5: Which plan is cheapest once everything is added?

A fair way to compare Rakuten Travel hotel deals is to line up the full stay total for your whole group, with taxes, meals and cancellation terms written next to it, before you pick one.

Use a short checklist on each finalist:

  • Headcount and rate basis match what you entered.
  • Meals are included or not, as you expect.
  • Taxes are included or listed as paid at the hotel.
  • The cancel deadline fits your travel plans.
  • Payment type matches any coupon you are using.

If you’ve ever booked a “cheap” room and then paid tax and breakfast on arrival, you know why the last two lines matter. Planning the trip around other bookings too? Our Klook Deals: How to Find Good Ones Step by Step guide uses the same total-cost approach for tours and passes.

What can you still change after booking?

On Rakuten Travel, guest names and the number of guests cannot be changed online, extra nights need a separate booking, and dropping nights is done through a “Cancel Nights” option, according to the Rakuten Travel English FAQ.

I found that this matters most for group trips. If a friend drops out, you cannot simply edit the headcount online. You either cancel and rebook inside the free window or contact the hotel.

Changes and cancellations go through “My Reservation” on the site, using your booking number and email. If the online option is not available, the FAQ says to contact the hotel directly.

Tips

  • Search with your real headcount from the start so per-person plans are priced correctly.
  • Screenshot the plan page showing the price, meals and cancel deadline at the moment you book.
  • Keep your booking number and the email you used together; you need both to manage the reservation.

Warnings

  • Do not trust a coupon or promo code from a third-party site until it applies at checkout; codes on travel sites often carry plan, payment-type or date conditions.
  • After the hotel’s cancel deadline, the hotel can charge its cancellation fee to the card you gave, even on a pay-at-hotel plan.
  • Tax rules, including Tokyo’s accommodation tax, are set by local governments and can change; confirm the figure on the plan page for your dates.
