eBay Refurbished: How to Compare It With Amazon Renewed
Quick answer
eBay Refurbished and Amazon Renewed are both badged programs, not just a word in a listing. eBay’s gives you a 1-year Allstate warranty on Good, Very Good and Excellent grades and 2 years on Certified, plus free shipping and 30-day free returns. Amazon’s gives most items a 90-day return period, 365 days on Renewed Premium, and on some items a 30-day return followed by an 11-month Asurion warranty. The right comparison is not “which site is better” but the same product, same grade, with the warranty and return terms read off each listing.
Two listings for the same refurbished laptop, one on eBay and one on Amazon, can be a hundred words apart in what they actually promise. The word “refurbished” tells you almost nothing. The badge next to it, and the terms behind the badge, tell you everything.

What follows is the comparison I would run before paying for any refurbished electronics: what each program guarantees in writing, how to confirm a listing is actually inside the program, and the handful of lines on a product page that decide which one wins for a given item.

What does the eBay Refurbished badge guarantee?
According to eBay’s program page as of October 31, 2026, every eBay Refurbished purchase comes with a warranty serviced by Allstate, 2 years for Certified condition and 1 year for Excellent, Very Good and Good, plus free shipping and 30-day free returns, with limited exceptions (ebay.com/refurbished).
The four grades are defined on the same page:
- Certified: pristine, like-new condition, direct from the brand or an authorized seller with a licence or agreement from the manufacturer.
- Excellent: like-new with no visible wear, from a third-party seller eBay has vetted.
- Very Good: minimal visible wear, vetted seller.
- Good: moderate wear, vetted seller.
Three further points from eBay’s FAQ matter more than the grade names. The warranty starts on the purchase date and is registered with Allstate automatically; you get a separate email, and if it never arrives the badge plus your receipt is accepted as proof. Items must be restored to 100% functionality and repackaged with new accessories. And the “Seller Refurbished” condition is explicitly not part of the program; it is a label an individual seller chooses, with whatever that seller’s listing says.
That last line is the one people miss.
Program items are also covered by the eBay Money Back Guarantee, which eBay describes as covering the purchase price plus original shipping on eligible purchases at no extra fee, with the process being contact the seller first and escalate to eBay if nothing is resolved after three business days (pages.ebay.com).
What does Amazon Renewed guarantee?
Amazon’s Renewed Guarantee help page states that most Amazon Renewed items include a 90-day return period, Renewed Premium and Renewed Automotive items come with a 365-day return period, and select items instead carry Amazon’s 30-day return period followed by a free 11-month limited warranty serviced by Asurion for defects in material and workmanship with no deductible (amazon.com).
Under that Asurion warranty, Amazon says the item is repaired or replaced, or you receive a gift card or cheque for the purchase price less taxes and separately stated fees, at Asurion’s choice. The warranty excludes accident, misuse, neglect, fire, water, alteration, third-party repair, third-party parts and commercial use. Amazon also reserves the right to decline returns if it decides the guarantee is being abused.
The Renewed storefront describes the supply side in one sentence: products are inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers. There is no public grade ladder equivalent to eBay’s four tiers on the main page; the distinction Amazon draws is between standard Renewed and Renewed Premium.
When I compared the two help pages, I found that Amazon’s language is about return periods and Amazon’s own guarantee, while eBay’s is about a third-party warranty that outlives the return window. Those are different kinds of protection, and the table below is built around that difference.
eBay Refurbished vs Amazon Renewed, Line by Line
Side by side, using only what each company publishes on its own pages:
| Term | eBay Refurbished | Amazon Renewed |
|---|---|---|
| Who refurbishes | Brand or authorized seller (Certified); eBay-vetted third-party sellers (other grades) | Amazon-qualified suppliers |
| Published condition grades | Certified, Excellent, Very Good, Good | Renewed, Renewed Premium (no public wear ladder on the main page) |
| Return window | 30 days, free, with limited exceptions | 90 days on most items; 365 days on Renewed Premium and Automotive; 30 days on select Asurion-covered items |
| Warranty after the return window | Allstate: 2 years (Certified), 1 year (other grades), from purchase date | None stated for most items; 11-month Asurion warranty on select items after the 30-day return |
| Shipping | Free, per program page | Per listing |
| Buyer protection layer | eBay Money Back Guarantee on top of the warranty | Amazon Renewed Guarantee; Amazon may decline if abused |
| Accessories | Repackaged with new accessories, per FAQ | Not stated on the guarantee page; check the listing |
| How to confirm | eBay Refurbished badge and a grade on the listing | “Renewed” in the title and guarantee wording on the product page |
Read as a whole, eBay’s program is stronger on the long tail: a laptop that dies in month nine is a warranty claim on eBay and, on most Amazon Renewed items, outside the 90-day window. Amazon’s program is stronger in the first three months, where a 90-day no-questions return beats a 30-day one. Neither page publishes the inspection checklist, so “multi-point inspection” and “professionally inspected” cannot be compared on evidence.

How do you check a listing is really in the program?
An eBay listing is inside eBay Refurbished only if it carries the eBay Refurbished badge with one of the four grades, because eBay’s own FAQ says “Seller Refurbished” is a seller-chosen condition outside the program and does not come with the Allstate warranty.
Method 1: Verify an eBay listing
Step 1. Look for the eBay Refurbished badge near the condition line. Then read the grade: Certified, Excellent, Very Good or Good.
Step 2. Open the condition description. A program listing restates the grade definition. A “Seller Refurbished” or “Used” listing shows the seller’s own text instead.
Step 3. Check the shipping and returns box. Program items should show free shipping and 30-day free returns; if the listing shows buyer-paid return shipping, it is not a program item.
Step 4. After purchase, watch for the Allstate warranty email. Keep the order receipt either way.
Method 2: Verify an Amazon listing
Step 1. Confirm “Renewed” or “Renewed Premium” appears in the product title, not just in a seller’s bullet points.
Step 2. Find the return window on the product page and in the order details after purchase; Amazon’s guarantee page says eligibility is shown there, and the 90-day, 365-day and 30-day-plus-Asurion cases are listed on different items.
Step 3. Read the seller name under the buy box. Renewed items come from suppliers Amazon has qualified, but the listing can be fulfilled by Amazon or shipped by the seller, which changes who handles the return.
Step 4. If the page mentions Asurion, note that the 30-day Amazon return comes first and the 11-month warranty starts after it.
If you have ever been caught by an item that said refurbished in the title but was a used listing underneath, you know why Method 1 Step 2 is there.
Which program wins for which purchase?
For an item you want to keep for years, eBay Refurbished’s 1- or 2-year Allstate warranty usually matters more than Amazon’s 90-day return, while for an item you need to test hard in the first weeks, Amazon Renewed’s longer return window is the more useful term.
| Situation | Lean towards | Why, in each program’s own terms |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop, tablet or console you expect to keep 2+ years | eBay Refurbished, Certified if available | 2-year Allstate warranty from purchase date |
| Phone you want to run through a full billing cycle before committing | Amazon Renewed | 90-day return on most items |
| Premium-tier item where you want a year to change your mind | Amazon Renewed Premium | 365-day return period |
| Item where the cosmetic grade matters (screen, finish) | eBay Refurbished | Four published wear grades to hold the seller to |
| Item with an Asurion note on the Amazon page | Roughly even | 30-day return plus 11-month defect warranty approaches eBay’s 1 year |
| Anything listed as “Seller Refurbished” on eBay | Treat as used | Outside the program, no Allstate warranty |
Price still decides a lot of these. A warranty is worth something only if the price gap does not already exceed the cost of a repair. Pull up sold prices on eBay before you anchor on either listing; the earlier guide on eBay Deals: How to Buy Smart Step by Step covers the sold-listings filter.
What to Compare on the Two Product Pages
With one product open on each site, these are the lines to put next to each other before buying either one:
- Grade and its definition. eBay: which of the four grades. Amazon: Renewed or Renewed Premium, and whether the listing describes cosmetic condition at all.
- Return window and who pays return shipping. eBay program: 30 days free. Amazon: 90, 365, or 30 plus Asurion, as shown on that product page.
- Warranty length and who services it. Allstate on eBay; Asurion on select Amazon items; otherwise none stated.
- Accessories and packaging. eBay’s FAQ says new accessories; on Amazon read the listing’s “what’s in the box”.
- Battery statement. Neither program page promises a battery health percentage, so if the listing does not say, assume nothing.
- Seller. Brand or authorized seller versus third party on eBay; supplier versus Amazon-fulfilled on Amazon.
- Total price with shipping and tax. Free shipping is built into eBay’s program; on Amazon it depends on the listing and your membership.
When I checked both program pages for a published inspection checklist, neither one lists the tests performed, so a listing that itemises what was tested is giving you more than either program requires. Reward that with your money.

Tips
- Screenshot the condition description and the returns box on the day you buy. Listings get edited; your screenshot is what you hold the seller to.
- On eBay, filter by condition to Certified or Excellent first, then widen to Very Good only if the price gap is large. The warranty length drops from 2 years to 1 below Certified.
- On Amazon, put the item through its paces inside the return window, not after. The guarantee is a return right, not a repair right, on most items.
- Keep the warranty email from Allstate in a folder with the receipt. A claim in month 20 is a lot easier with both.
Warnings
- Terms above are from each company’s pages as of October 31, 2026 and apply to the US sites. Both say exceptions apply and that the product page controls eligibility.
- “Refurbished” in a title does not put a listing in either program. Look for the eBay Refurbished badge or the Renewed guarantee wording.
- Amazon’s Asurion warranty and eBay’s Allstate warranty both exclude accidental damage. Neither replaces insurance for a dropped phone.
- Amazon states it can decline returns it judges to be abuse of the guarantee; repeated buy-and-return cycles can cost you the protection.
FAQ
Does eBay Refurbished cover items that are Seller Refurbished?
No. eBay’s FAQ says Seller Refurbished is a condition set by an individual seller and is not part of the eBay Refurbished program. Those items do not get the Allstate warranty or the program’s free 30-day returns; the seller’s own return policy applies.
Is the Amazon Renewed return period always 90 days?
No. Amazon says most Renewed items have 90 days, Renewed Premium and Renewed Automotive have 365 days, and select items have a 30-day return followed by an 11-month Asurion warranty. The product page and your order history show which applies.
Which one has a warranty after the return window closes?
eBay Refurbished always does, through Allstate, for 1 or 2 years from the purchase date. Amazon Renewed only does on the select items that carry the Asurion warranty; for the rest, protection ends with the return period.
