Fat Cat Card: How to Tell if KAST Premium Pays Off

Short answer: Compare Premium with the free Standard tier, not with zero. Standard already pays up to $30 a month. Premium costs about $83.33 a month and pays 2% on the first $10,000. It pays for itself in cash at about $5,667 of USD card spend a month. Private needs about $28,778 a month to beat Standard.

KAST sells three membership tiers, and the jump between them is steep: $0, then $1,000 a year, then $10,000 a year. The question most people ask is whether the higher cashback rate covers the fee.

The answer depends on one number you already know. How much do you put on the card in a normal month?

What do the three KAST tiers charge and pay?

As of KAST’s October 22, 2026 fee page, the Standard tier is free and pays 1.5% USD cashback on the first $2,000 of card spend each month, Premium costs $1,000 a year and pays 2% on the first $10,000, and Private costs $10,000 a year and pays 3% on the first $40,000.

KAST tier Annual fee Fee per month USD cashback Monthly cashback ceiling KAST Points
Standard $0 $0 1.5% on the first $2,000/month $30 None
Premium $1,000 $83.33 2% on the first $10,000/month $200 1% on eligible spend
Private $10,000 $833.33 3% on the first $40,000/month $1,200 2% on eligible spend

The ceilings in the fifth column are just the rate times the cap. Standard tops out at $30, Premium at $200, Private at $1,200.

Some things don’t change with the tier. The KAST fee page lists the same 0% top-up fee, the same 0.5% to 1.75% foreign exchange fee, and the same ATM fee of $3 plus 2% for all three. So those costs cancel out when you compare tiers.

Why compare Premium with Standard instead of with zero?

A KAST Premium membership has to beat the free Standard tier you’d otherwise keep, so its real cost is the $1,000 fee plus the up-to-$30 a month of Standard cashback you already get for free.

When I checked our older KAST cashback guide, I noticed that it worked out Premium’s fee recovery at 2% against nothing. That gives about $4,167 a month. It’s a fair first pass, but it leaves out the Standard cashback you’d already be earning.

This part trips a lot of people up. Upgrading doesn’t add 2%. It adds the gap between 2% and what Standard was already paying.

How much do you need to spend for KAST Premium to pay off?

KAST Premium pays for itself in USD cashback at about $5,667 of monthly card spend, or roughly $68,000 a year, based on the 2% rate and $1,000 fee on KAST’s October 2026 fee page compared with the free Standard tier.

Here’s the working, in three lines:

  1. Above $2,000 of spend, Standard is capped at $30 a month.
  2. Premium’s net is 2% of spend minus $83.33 a month.
  3. Set them equal: 0.02 ร— spend โˆ’ $83.33 = $30. Spend = $113.33 รท 0.02 = $5,666.67.

Below $2,000 a month, Premium can’t win. The extra 0.5% on $2,000 is only $10, nowhere near $83.33.

Honestly, that’s the whole decision for most people.

Laptop with a spreadsheet used to compare monthly card spend against an annual fee
Per KAST’s October 22, 2026 fee page, Premium matches the free Standard tier in USD cashback at about $5,667 of monthly card spend.

What does each tier leave you at common spending levels?

At $3,000 of monthly USD card spend, KAST Standard nets $30 of cashback while Premium nets about -$23.33 after its fee and Private nets about -$743.33, using the rates and fees on KAST’s October 22, 2026 fee page.

The table below is monthly net: cashback minus one twelfth of the annual fee. Points aren’t counted.

Monthly USD card spend Standard net Premium net Private net
$1,000 $15.00 -$63.33 -$803.33
$2,000 $30.00 -$43.33 -$773.33
$3,000 $30.00 -$23.33 -$743.33
$5,000 $30.00 $16.67 -$683.33
$5,667 $30.00 $30.01 -$663.32
$10,000 $30.00 $116.67 -$533.33
$20,000 $30.00 $116.67 -$233.33
$31,667 $30.00 $116.67 $116.68
$40,000 $30.00 $116.67 $366.67

Read it row by row. Premium only moves ahead of Standard somewhere between $5,000 and $10,000. Past $10,000, Premium stops growing, because its cap is reached, and sits at $116.67 a month.

I found that the spread at the top is narrower than the headline rates suggest. Premium’s best month beats Standard’s best month by $86.67, which is about $1,040 a year. That’s the most the upgrade can ever earn you in cash.

When does KAST Private beat Premium?

KAST Private beats Premium in USD cashback once monthly card spend passes about $31,667, and beats the free Standard tier at about $28,778, using the 3% rate, $40,000 cap and $10,000 annual fee on KAST’s October 2026 fee page.

Comparison Equation Break-even monthly spend Per year
Premium vs Standard 0.02S โˆ’ 83.33 = 30 $5,666.67 $68,000
Private vs Standard 0.03S โˆ’ 833.33 = 30 $28,777.78 $345,333
Private vs Premium (Premium capped) 0.03S โˆ’ 833.33 = 116.67 $31,666.67 $380,000

At Private’s own cap, $40,000 a month, the net is $366.67. That’s $250 a month more than a capped Premium card. You’d need to put almost half a million dollars a year through a single card to get there.

If you’ve ever paid for an airline lounge membership you barely used, you know how this ends for most people. The top tier is built for a very small group.

How much are KAST Points worth in this math?

KAST Points have no cash value stated on KAST’s October 22, 2026 fee page, which lists Premium at 1% and Private at 2% back in points on eligible card spend, so any break-even that counts points depends on a value you have to assume.

KAST’s fee page does show an “illustrative net effect” of up to 2.5% for Premium and up to 4.5% for Private. Those figures add cashback and points together and subtract the lowest FX fee. KAST calls them illustrative and says actual rewards vary.

So treat points as a range. This is a what-if, not a promise:

If 1 point of spend is worth Premium effective rate Premium vs Standard break-even
Nothing (cash only) 2% About $5,667 a month
Half its face value 2.5% About $4,533 a month
Full face value 3% About $3,778 a month

The bottom row assumes points earn on all eligible spend with no cap. KAST’s page doesn’t list a points cap, but it says rewards are subject to caps and terms, so check the app.

Run your own number

Take your last three card statements and use the average, not your biggest month.

  • Under $2,000 a month: stay on Standard. No upgrade can pay off.
  • $2,000 to $5,667: Standard still wins in cash. Premium only makes sense if you value the points highly.
  • $5,667 to $10,000: Premium wins in cash, by up to $86.67 a month.
  • Over about $28,778: run the Private row before you decide.

Count only spending you’d put on the card anyway. Moving rent or bills onto it to hit a threshold can cost more in other fees than the cashback returns. For what the cap does to a single big purchase, see Fat Cat Card: Time a Big Purchase Around Cashback Caps.

Tips

  • Use USD spend in your calculation. Non-USD purchases add the same FX fee on every tier.
  • Funding by bank transfer has its own fees. Our guide to Fat Cat Card: How to Choose ACH, Wire or SEPA for KAST covers them.
  • Recheck the fee page before you pay. KAST updated it on October 22, 2026.
  • Write down your three-month average before opening the upgrade screen.

Warnings

  • The break-even counts USD cashback only. KAST does not state a cash value for KAST Points.
  • Rewards are subject to eligibility, caps, regional availability and KAST’s latest terms, per its fee page.
  • An annual fee is paid up front. A quiet month later in the year still costs the same.
  • This is a cost comparison, not financial advice.

FAQ

Does the KAST Premium fee cover the physical card?

KAST’s fee page (updated October 22, 2026) says Premium includes 1 Premium card plus the Standard allowance, while a Standard physical card costs $0 plus a $40 delivery fee. That saves at most $40 once, which does not change the break-even much against a $1,000 yearly fee.

Do KAST Points count toward the break-even?

Only if you can value them. KAST lists Premium at 1% and Private at 2% back in KAST Points on eligible spend, but its fee page does not give a cash value per point. The cash break-even worked out here counts USD cashback only.

Does the foreign exchange fee change which KAST tier wins?

No. KAST’s fee page lists the same 0.5% to 1.75% foreign exchange fee for Standard, Premium and Private, so it lowers the net result of every tier by the same amount and does not move the break-even spend.
